List of The Failures Abraham Lincoln Faced In His Life

1809: Born to a very poor family in a one-room log cabin on a barren farm with dirt floors.

1816: His family was forced out of their home and he needed to work to support his family.

1818: Abraham Lincoln’s mother passed away, and he was only nine years old.

1828: His elder sister Sarah dies while giving birth to a stillborn son, devastating Lincoln.

1831: Lincoln was unsuccessful in his first business venture and was forced to work as a clerk.

1832: Lost his job. In the same year, he ran for the State Legislature but was defeated. He wanted to attend law school but couldn’t get in due to insufficient funds.

1833: He borrowed money from a friend to start a business. At the end of the year, he was bankrupt. It took him 10 years to pay off all his debt.

1834: Lincoln ran for the State Legislature again. This time he was elected because of his hard efforts.

1835: Lincoln decided to marry the first love of his life. Unfortunately, his fiancée got sick and died. Her death took Lincoln to an emotional edge. He felt like committing suicide.

Know How Struggling Abraham Lincoln’s Life Was

1836: He faced a serious nervous breakdown and was bedridden for 6 months. Later he sought to become Speaker of the State Legislature but was defeated once again.

1838: Nominated for Illinois House Speaker but defeated.

1842: Lincoln marries Mary Todd. Finally, he was admitted to practice law in the U.S. District Court.

1843: He was defeated for nomination to Congress.

1846: Lincoln ran for Congress again. This time he won and moved to Washington.

1848: He ran for re-election to Congress but lost once again.

1849: Abraham Lincoln sought the job of Land Officer in his home state but unfortunately didn’t get the job. Admitted to practice law in the U.S. Supreme Court.

1850: Lincoln’s 4-year-old son, Edward Baker Lincoln dies of TB.

1854: He ran for the Senate of the United States but lost.

1856: He was defeated for the nomination for Vice President by William Lewis Dayton. Lincoln got only 110 votes.

1858: Lincoln ran for the US Senate again. He lost again and was defeated by Stephen A. Douglas.

1860: Abraham Lincoln was elected President of the United States.

1862: His 12-year-old son, Willie Lincoln, dies of a fever. Lincoln had 4 boys but only one would live to maturity.

1865: On April 14, Abraham Lincoln was assassinated.
