He carved a path 360-foot-long (110 m) through-cut, 25-foot-deep (7.6 m) in places, and 30-foot-wide (9.1 m) to form a road through a mountain in the Gehlour hills, working day and night for 22 years from 1960 to 1982.

What is more astonishing about this herculean task is – He did it only by using a hammer and chisel. His feat reduced the distance between the Atri and Wazirganj blocks of the Gaya district from 55 km to 15 km, bringing him national acclaim. Though initially mocked for his efforts, this only served to strengthen his resolve.

But as time went by, the unfazed farmer continued to split the troublesome hill in half, he started getting some help. But what inspired Dashrath Manjhi to start this inhumane task while there was no immediate benefit in the near future?

Manjhi’s wife, Falguni Devi got injured while working. The injury was not much critical subject to the availability of the medical facility. The nearest hospital was in Gaya district, 15 km away from Gehlaur.

But, due to the presence of the mountain between Gehlaur and Gaya, the 15 km journey stretched to 55 km. She died due to not receiving immediate medical attention.

The death of his wife, in 1959, broke Manjhi but he didn’t give up. If you were in this situation what would you do? Criticise government or fate? But this man had another plan. His loss engendered a thought of making a path by carving the mountain.

He started his work and spent more than two decades trying to dig through the mountain using a hammer and chisel. In the early days, villagers lambasted him. But, that didn’t stop Mr. Manjhi from doing his job.

With each day he became more inexorable. He did it so that his village could have easier access to medical attention after his wife died from a lack thereof.
