1. Never Bow To A Tyrant: Story About The Courage of A Woman

The history of India is full of incidences, in which the lustful husbands are brought on the righteous path by the prudence of their better halves. This is a similar anecdote, which takes us to the Maharashtra of the seventeenth century. By then, sage Ramdas, the brave Shivaji, and his wise mother, Jijabai have already expired.

Shambhaji, the licentious successor of Shivaji was imprisoned in the fort of Panhala. This time, the fragile Maratha Empire, on the verge of disintegration was saved by Shambhaji’s wife, Yeshubai. She turned this lethargic prince into an ardent warrior.

She supported and motivated him, taught him to differentiate between right and wrong, and reminded him of the high ideals of his father. It would not be wrong to say that she transformed his very personality. She always accompanied him like a shadow.

She made him morally very strong. Even when he was captured by Aurangzeb, he did not convert to Islam, despite all the torture. Consequently, he was assassinated. However, Yeshubai was still relentless.

She declared Rajaram, her brother-in-law as the Maratha Chief. She was even imprisoned in Delhi for sixteen years. But, she continued guiding Rajaram by sending messages and helped him to become the ‘Chhatrapati’.

She was released in 1719. Finally, she took her last breath in her own independent state at the age of seventy.

2. Do Not Run Away: A Story of Courage By Swami Vivekananda

The monkeys of Varanasi (India) are considered very wicked. There is an anecdote connected with them that was often recounted by Swami Vivekananda. He would say: “Once I was going to a place in Varanasi. The area on the way was infested with monkeys.

These monkeys were quite notorious for tormenting passers-by. They behaved in the same way with me too, as they presumably, did not like my intrusion into their territory. With shrill shrieks, they descended upon me and started biting at my legs.

It seemed impossible to get rid of them. I fled the place, but alas! The more I ran, the more the wicked monkeys would chase and bite me. Suddenly, an unfamiliar voice rang in my ears:

“Do not run away, confront. I halted in my tracks, stood erect resolutely, and uttered a severe scolding. The monkeys, taken aback, ran away”.

Life has its share of adversities and challenges. We all have to face them boldly and squarely.

4. A Tea Combat: A Zen Story on Importance of Courage

A master of the tea ceremony in old Japan once accidentally slighted a soldier. He quickly apologized, but the rather impetuous soldier demanded that the matter be settled in a sword duel. But the tea master had no experience with swords.

So he asked the advice of a fellow Zen master who did possess such skill. As he was served by his friend, the Zen swordsman could not help but notice how the tea master performed his art with perfect concentration and tranquility.

“Tomorrow,” the Zen swordsman said, “when you duel the soldier, hold your weapon above your head, as if ready to strike, and face him with the same concentration and tranquility with which you perform the tea ceremony.”

The next day, at the appointed time and place for the duel, the tea master followed this advice. The soldier, readying himself to strike, stared for a long time into the fully attentive but calm face of the tea master.

Finally, the soldier lowered his sword, apologized for his arrogance, and left without a blow being struck. Inner Peace and courage are sometimes more powerful and intimidating than anything else.

The soldier bowed to the tea master because he had a higher level of confidence… a higher level of courage.

Bruno’s words were considered a heresy by the Catholic Church and he was sentenced to be burnt alive at the stake. When the verdict was read out to him, he said, “I am truly scientific only because I am truly spiritual.”

“Faith, or science, both encourage the discovery of truth. They do not conflict with each other. As far as my punishment goes, I am not the least bit scared, but I am sure that the judge who issued the judgment is a frightened man.”
